Flying Visitors

The past several summers have brought a variety of flying visitors to my yard, ones other than the birds, that is.  They bring more variety of color and behave quite differently than the birds, of course, and are quite a bit more difficult to approach for photographing.   I like the challenge of getting close enough to “shoot” them without frightening them off.

I believe this is a "Baltimore Checkerspot"

Northern Pearly Eye

It’s been quite a learning curve for me to catch up with them with my camera!

Black Admiral

Hummingbird Moth

Monarch Butterfly

If you think I may have misidentified any of these, please let me know.  I’d appreciate any corrections as I’d like to be as accurate as I can!

  1. Wonderful post, like you I love butterflies and moths. Great work. 🙂

  2. Thank you, Francis. Won’t be long and we’ll be seeing them again, I hope. I heard the chorus of spring peepers last night!

  3. Your photography have developed a lot through the years, Clover. I do not even have a single picture of a butterfly! I looked at most of your older photos on your blog as well and you do have a rich collection of wonderful pictures.

  4. Thanks you for you nice comments, Ria.
I wonder what kind of butterflies you would have in your area; I’ll have to look up and see!

  5. Hi,
Beautiful photos of the butterfly’s, they do have some wonderful pattern’s across their wings. I have never heard of the hummingbird moth before, he is a rather strange looking character. 🙂

  6. magsx2 — Thank you for your comments. The hummingbird moth is a rather elusive visitor. So far, I’ve only see them that one year, a couple of different days, and then never came back that I’ve seen. Very fast moving, too, and at a quick glance, you might think it is a bird.
